does anybody know of any sites that have forums where i could get advice on purchasing a dvd recorder for use instead of vhs video. the one i have looked at is panasonic e50 which uses dvd-ram and dvd-r.its all very confusing.....thanks

You could try here click here I went and bought a Philips dvdr 880 without knowing anything about them. They are brilliant but I just wish that I had bought the 890 as you can make an exact copy from another disc with that one (or a camera). Philips use DVD+R/RW which is rather new, but I can assure you the resulsts of the recordings are stunning and it is well worth getting one
