DVD not working after Clean Reinstall

I have had ot carry out a complete reinstall of XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 5100. All is working again except the DVD writer - a Philips DVD +-RW 8701. It will playback DVD movies with VLC, and it seems to record data (ie one can see the slightly discoloured area on the disc after recording) However it cannot read back any of that data and the verification process of BurnAware fails. I have downloaded the driver from Dell, but the computer tells me the driver installed is OK. Is this a coincidence or do I need to do anything extra to get it to work?

Why did you re-install. Was it because of this same problem ?

Sounds to me like the drive is faulty, new ones are quite inexpensive nowadays. Probably not worth mucking about with.

Thanks Marv, I reinstalled due to a complete failure to boot in either normal or safe mode - or any other mode for that matter!! (See my previous thread)
I suspect you may be right and a new drive is called for.

Done it and all's well.
