DVD drive will not play DVD discs

Recently, my DVD drive will not play DVD discs. Initially, DVDs plaed fine, preumably with the programme 'PowerDVD' (installed by Dell) but now every time I insert a DVD disc in the DVD drive I get a fault and the programme stalls. I have re-intalled the programme 'PowerDVD' to no effect. The drive plays CD discs fine. I would be grateful for any suggestions re a fix.

Did you re-install over the top of the previous installation? If so, try removing the old version from Add/Remove Programs before re-installing again.

The message is that PowerDVD has ecountered a fault and will have top close.
I uninstalled the programmes and then installed afresh.

Have you ran the diagnostic rourine in Power dvd?
this may point you in the right direction.

I do not know how to make a diagnostic check and would be grateful for help.
It seems that everytime I want to run the DVD player MS Windows Media Player wants to take control.
