DVD copier

I am considering buying a DVD writer with a view to producing backup copies of my DVD films.
However, having read up on the subject, and downloaded some "ripping" software, the software advises me that my FAT32 file system (Win ME), only supports 4Gb files, which are too small for the average film when ripped to hard disk.
Without resorting to compression techniques, how can a larger file be copied?

Thanks for the info. DVDShrink is a compression tool, but I will try it to see if quality suffers.
