DVD Burner failure or dud disks which?

The DVD burner has decided it does not want to know DVD disks.
Quite happy to burn CD's
But DVD's which it was burning upto Saturday - now it does not want to know.
I have the option of burning DVD's via several softwares depending on what I am doing.
Preferred is CD Burner XP Pro or the built in burn routine in my slide show maker.
In each case they take a long time to realize that there is a disk in the drive.
Then when they do - I am told either no disk or the wrong sort of disk.
Then just now I got

The disks are a unbranded printable bulk pack
but have worked both on the machine and on the PVR

So what have I got
Dud burner
dud disks
dud software.?
How can I check which?

Could be a DVD laser that has gone kaput or, despite having used them before, your disk media.

Have a spare from an scrap PC dangling and it appears to be doing the business as I type.
Now to see if it did the job.
Yes it did.

Not a make I have heard of -------VOM
but it goes vrooom
So it will do.
Now to shut down unscrew and swap em over.
