DVD Audio volume

I have a Matsonic MS8147C motherboard with in-built audio and the sound volume when playing a pre-recorded DVD is very low, even after putting all the settings for volume to maximum. Sound levels from other sources are acceptable. The DVD drive is a LG Super Multi DVD drive GSA-4081B. My speakers are from my old Siemens computer and are of unknown make, they can be either passive or active; on my old computer they did emit sound in the passive mode, however on my new set-up they have to have power to work. In order to get an acceptable level of sound, do I need to change my speakers or install a better sound card?

If you have an old hifi lying about why not use that, just connect the speakers connector on your pc to either the Aux or to the microphone on the hifi, I used to do that and got quite good sound.
