dumb question

I know this most probably sounds dumb but.....
If I use a wired or wired router between 2 p.c.`s do I have to have the main one switched on in order to use the other one

If you use a 'wire' (crossover lan/ethernet cable) then yes you'll have to have the main pc on. If however you use a router both pc's can have access regardless of which is switched on as internet access is gained through the router as opposed to the main pc.

I'm sure someone will explain it better.

If both computers are connected direct to the Router NO, you only switch the computer on you are using

Go for a router with straight network cable.

or even wireless if distance involved
