i was wondering if i could get adsl on a second computer by just buying a new dsl modem and attaching it to the same phone line. if not, what is the cheapest way to do this. thanks

You'll have to network the computers and set up Internet Connection Sharing.

You can get ADSL on a second computer in this way, but only plug one modem into the phone line at a time because the exchange will disable ADSL.

The cheapest way is with a wired router. The easiest is with a wireless router

The PC that has the connection will become the gateway and you connect both PCs with a Wireless Card to each other and set the Gateway PC to share the connection. You will end up buying otherwise a Router and two wireless cards anyway, best are USB type cards that are plugged into each PC and then set up a Network via the Network Wizard. This will share ADSL and the other recources you have printers etc.
