Drive will not read CDs any more

I have a DVD player/CD rewriter LG GSA-4082B. It plays DVDs perfectly but has stopped recognising all types of CD. Any ideas?

This probably wont be much help, but have you tried locating the firmware from the LG site for that player and reinstall it?
Failing that, if it stopped reading cd's recently, maybe a system restore might help.

Wait for better replies first :-/

Try a music cd. if no joy then try booting to dos from an external source (not forgeting to enable cdrom support) then make the drive current. if you can do that-and you should as the dvd part works- then try a DIR to read the directory. obviously put a disc in first. dvd's should read ok, but if you get something like a cdr101 message then the cd side of it is stuffed.

BTW, the point of trying the drive in dos is to eliminate any possible problems caused by windows.

Unfortunately if reading DVDs not CDs then the drive is probably us.

There are either two lasers (CD one failed) or one laser that gets realigned (aligning electronics failed).

First try to uninstall and reinstall the driver in device manager.
If no go then check ide ribbon cable not loose at DVD or motherboard (unlikely).

At £30 for a new DVd rewriter they are not worth repairing

told you there'd be better replies #:-/
Enjoy the space on dvd's for burning and also enjoy the capability of copying dvd's, lash out on £30
