I did a scan with ADWCleaner, and I think it cleaned out Java - but this offered itself as an update, which I then installed. I have W7, 64 bit. Do I need Java? I just surf, do photography, music and the usual Word etc.

Chances are you don't.

A few websites (still) use it, but not many.

OpenOffice and LibreOffice both use Java, but most functionality still works without Java. For example, I believe some of LibreOffice's wizards use Java.

You can readily uninstall it and then see if you run into any problems. If you do, you can reinstall.

Some weather and webcam sites use it as well as Intel auto scan and Nvidia auto scan use it. If it's already installed you could run with it disabled rather than uninstalled, Disable Java, and just enable it when required.

I run without it.

Thanks both. I will try it disabled.
