Disk read error at start up

Tried to start up computer running Windows XP professional that was working fine earlier in the day. Get Disk read error at startup Alte/control delete to reboot.

Any suuggestions? Cannot start up in safe mode etc.

Start machine, hit Del or F2 or F10 repeatedly for BIOS, go into IDE or Standard CMOS settings, see if the drive is recognised, if not it may be toast, if it is and there is a model number and/or manufacturer
get a diagnostic from the maker and test the disc.

Tried tapping the f keys you suggested plus f8 but cannot get into anything. Safe mode etc.

Tried using my Windows setup disk but it would not let me repair it.

Any further ideas suggestions?

Could be the disk on the way out or perhaps the IDE cable. You could try a spare cable perhaps.
