Disk Failure!!

My IBM hard disk failed without warning recently, and with no CD-R drive, I had no document back-ups. Is there any way of finding out whether the data is recoverable? Either with sofware or via a specialist? IBM was not helpful...

Can you please state which operating system you had on the drive. If it was windows98 you should be able to boot from floppy and see if you can access the hard drive.
The best solution really, is to remove the hard drive and put it into another machine (maybe a friends) as a slave and see if windows explorer can access it. If you have bad sectors in just system file areas then it should be ok for recovering data.
What happens when you switch on exactly? what messages come up?

The OS is XP Home. The message that appears at boot is "disk boot failure - unable to find disk" or something to that effect. Thanks for the tip about connecting it as a slave - I'll give it a try.

My son has had to replace not one but two IBM three-figure GB HDDs (before the linkup with Hitachi) after they failed.

He was using them in a server and, when he contacted IBM, was informed that they were not intended to be run for longer than a few hours at a time; not much use in a server or any other capacity for that matter...;-)

After a lot of wrangling IBM eventually agreed, somewhat reluctantly, to replace them; it seemed it was well aware of the problem.

One of the HDDs was collected, the other is still awaiting its departure several months later.

Tried connecting the IBM as a slave to my old 13gb Fujitsu. Worked like a gem! Got my files back and repaired the boot problem. Am now running the IBM as master and have re-fitted the Fujitsu as slave for back-ups - I'll only make that mistake once!
