Disk Defragmenter problem

  Rhuddlan 16:58 25 Aug 2006

Hi All,

When trying to use disk defragmenter my computer seems to crash after analyzing on 40% of my hard disk.

I have not installed any new hardware or software and have not changed any settings.

Any ideas?

First off what OS are you using?
and are you using the default defrag that came with windows or a separate app?.

then i would run a scan disk/check disk just to rule out file errors, then make sure nothing else is running than could access the hard drive while defrag is running this may cause it to stop or restart, you might be best off running it in safe mode and see if that works.

Have you switched off the screensaver or other power saving/protection means?

Another way to prevent them cutting in is to click the mouse every few minutes (inside the time set for a screensaver to operate).

It's almost certainly some background running application that's causing Defrag to stop.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode, and run Scandisk from there. It should be fine.

Thanks for the reponses.

I am running Windows XP Home SP2.

It's the standard defrag windows program.

I haven't got a screensaver switched on.

Will try in safe mode tomorrow (i'm off out to a party now!)

Report back tomorrow.
