during boot-up i get:

i dont have Recovery Disk (could i obtain one? & would it work? )
Idont have System Disk either

If i get new computer, could i get data off the old drive?
Windows 98
Bios says hardware is Ok

Two things, you don't have a floppy in the drive do you :-o

Open the case and check the ribbons and power connectors to the HD are secure at both the HD & MB ends.

Another thing to check.

Make sure you have not left a CD disk in the drive. If the computer is set to boot from the CD drive first and is having problems reading the disk it could respond with the message you are getting.

A slight chance before you despair..........
Switch on again and hit F8 repeatedly until you see a black DOS screen with options in white.

Try Safe Mode first.
If that allows a fuzzy form of Windows to load you at least prove the hardware is behaving.
[If not]
Try again and this time select Command Prompt Only. this should wind up to a blank screen with just c:> showing and a flashing cursor.
Now type DIR and enter.
You should see a list of folders and files.

If you succeed with either of these things, post back again with what you see.

the Repair shop said that the Hard drive was dead
how to get my data off is next problem , of course ( ha! )
