k7 s5a mobo, 756 ddr 2100pc, 2.4xp athlon, windows xp home, sapphire 9700 pro. All have latest drivers.
I can't run 3dscore2001se since i installed direct x 9. It says it needs direct x 8.1. Is this right?

At a guess if thats what it says then thats what it means. Error messages don't come much clearer. You are trying to run a DX8 Benchmark running DX9 - this could (and probably would) give a false reading as DX9 is faster than DX8. So to stop that they probably make sure you run DX8. Simalar to if you where running DX7 then you would get a low reading.

you need 3d mark 2003 to run dx9 test you can get downlaod version 177mb tho so will take a while if you not got BB.

There are two builds of 3d Mark 2003 One for DX9 and DX9a and a new build of 3d Mark 2001 just for DX9a (i think it is build 330)

you can get it on the front of most of the latest computer magazines, program and drivers.

Click on the weblink inside 3DMark,and there is a "patch" available(think it was "check for updates" in 3dmark)Carn't remember the filesize, but don't remember d/ling 177mb.

The patch for 2001SE, is 2.66Mb may be even less when downloading if its zipped.

you need to get hold of 3dmark2001se build 330 or build 300 and the update patch for build 300.
after installing directx 9 uninstall 3d mark2001se restart mc and reinstall 2001se build 330 and everything should be ok

thanks for replies. I got the patch to make 3dscore 2001se to 330 build. 3D score now runs without getting the direct x 8.1 message but it only gets as far as 'lobby' in high detail and then computer shuts down and restarts - has one else come across this?

Probably heat

I was refering to the full download of 2003 not the patch the full download of that is 177 mb.

Many thanks for all replies.

As a update - I think Chegs is right. I shutdown, opened all windows and put a fan beside the case. I booted up about 1 hour later and the test ran with no problems.
