Direct Access Component IS a problem

When I use my DVD/CD drives, I have started to get regular messages saying "Direct Access Component has experienced a problem and needs to shut down" (or words to that effect). No matter whether I send an 'error' message or not, all the icons disappear from my desktop, but the computer keeps running. With Ctrl/Alt/Del I can access the Task Mngr and start programmes through the 'New Task' button, but the computer will not respond to any other commands. After about 7 mins all the icons return as if nothing had happened. Any thoughts? I'm running XP with SP2 and I have Norton System Works components and Microsoft's Antispyware Beta running in the background. Thanks.
