Digital projector fails to find signal?

Have spent all day trying to set up a digital projector for someone else's lecture.

Used my laptop and a borrowed cheap-o projector which has not been used for so long that the owner had almost forgotten he had it.

It is possible to play with the basic settings button on the case, but I've tried three different VGA cables and finally in exasperation connected it to my PC monitor.

Whatever I do I have a persistent screen (or wall) announcing No Signal. When first tried this morning the friend whose projector it is managed as far as desktop, where it stalled and didn't show any icons. This afternoon it wouldn't even do that, and settled for No Signal

Since a digital projector is only an elaborate monitor, stopping at No Signal means some failed internal circuit, or does it?

I have this feeble hope that someone can suggest a cure or at least a confirmation that this is dead. System is XP

Does the projector's menu show on the screen?

How are you connecting? Connecting to PC monitor probably would not work.

Are you using cloned or extended desktop from the laptop to the projector?

No signal means what it says - nothing is getting to the projector. Check cable connections and output is correct.

Thanks Woolwell.

I'm fortunate to have a good friend whose skill with electronics is unfailing, I took it to him.

Methodical to a fault he had the projector working from his laptop where mine still stubbornly refused to acknowledge it. Both laptops were XP

The solution was a missing display adaptor on both my laptop and Tower PC. He found the adaptor on a website with a long number SIS650etcetc. The quality of this recovered projector showed both its age and inadequacies. Very noisy, poor illumination and no better picture than a good slide projector. (Sour Grapes)

The original problem was to display a speaker's presentation to a Garden Society. The expensive speaker has done what she should have done in the first place and bought a new one!
