diffrence between router and modem?

hi. i have bt broad band and got a wired router with the package, i can connect it by the eather net cable or the usb. i want to get a wireless system so my son can use the internet in his room. i have looked at the mags and would like to now what is the difference between a router and a modem modem/router.

all help is appriciated.

A router assigns the IP address to the PC. If you intend to share the 'net', and you buy just a wireless router, you will have to connect the router to the modem, restart the modem, wait a few seconds for the modem to initialise and then turn on the router.

A modem/router combines the two.....

That's broadly speaking.... IP addresses can be fixed though....
