Dial up and Firewalls

I am on BB and yesterday I had 3 emails with attachments that were removed by my firewall because they possibly contained a virus. My friend who is on dial up got the same emails and of course opened them and was infected. AVG caught them but was unable to remove them. I got rid of these by using AVG again then Housecall. What I dont know and would like advice on is would a firewall be any advantage to him on his dialup connection. Advice gratefully received.
