desktop icons

How is a desktop icon allocated the picture that identifies it from others.
I.E. Lloyds Bank has the Black horse, but mine is a star? Tom Tom is normally two hands, mine is a book.
The reason I ask everytime I put an icon on desktop, it appears to automatically be given a picture the is not revelant to the icon.
Is there a way I can change this.

Many Thanks in advance
