Desktop DAT files after sending mail with OE.

I am trying to help a friend, who is unfortunately over 500 miles away so I can't easily get at his PC ...

He uses OE6 under W98. Recently DAT files, usually named ~.dat have begun to appear on his desktop after he has sent mail. These DAT files appear to contain random entries from his address book.

He is using NAV2004, and has convinced himself that NAV is the cause, though I can't see how it could be.

Has anyone come across this before?

In Win ME and 98SE whenever an address is changed in the address book a windows icon named '~' appears on the screen, it is a glich that apeared after a microsoft update a while ago. If that is what you your friend has just delete it or stick it in the recyle bin and delete it later.

It's not the fault of NAV, I get it on several machines some with NAV and some with other anti-virus and firewalls.

Thanks for the reassuring words, wiz-king. I'll check with him whether these files coincide with changes to his address book.
