Desktop connected to Laptop

I want to setup a basic connection between my wifes laptop and the houshold PC - no modem connection required - would a wifi card for each machine be sufficient to pass files and folders print jobs etc.,

Yes, it would. You can set up an "Ad Hoc" wireless network in which the two PCs communicate directly with one another. If there is no internet sharing involved, you will have to allocate fixed IP addresses to the two PCs using one of the ranges reserved for Local Area Networks, which will be something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with the same subnet address of 255.255.255.0 or 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 with the same subnet of 255.0.0.0

Both PCs need to be in the same Workgroup and any firewall software should be configured to allow access to the IP addresses of the networked PCs in its "trusted zone".
