I have just been given a DEll Laptop, CPi (I think), it works fine but the monitor screen/resolution - whatever (not a computer wizard) is large and obviously needs update - is it just software, or hardware I need?

you have looked at the display properties in Control panel, to see if you can increase the screen resolution?

If you have, and there is no way to improve matters that way you may be able to download an updated graphics driver; a lot depends on your operating system, and on the age of the machine.

Try running a Google search using the terms 'Dell graphics driver' and take it from there. Make sure that you find out exactly which graphics chip/card your computer has before you try to install anything

It has Windows 98, how do I check to find out about what graphics it has/card on the laptop
