Deleting old software to prevent conflicts

Can anybody recommend a method of totally removing unwanted software? I find that although I use the "uninstall" feature in Windows XP, there are still files left, some of which cannot be removed. I'm having problems burning DVDs, and wonder whether the software I'm using is conflicting with something that I've previously uninstalled. Thanks

You need a Registry cleaner. This is just one:

After using one, use RegCompact:

Many thanks for the suggestions; I used Ccleaner as suggested and it cleared out nearly 100 files!! Unfortunately whenever I tried to run the RegCompact.net I had an error message ("application failed to initialise properly"). Any other suggestions?
