deleting e mails without opening

Have lost the plot or is there no way of deleting unwanted e mails without opening them in the pre view pane.

I exclude all spam killing programmes.

Any help please.

It may be best to turn off the preview pane as this can still let through some nasties and of course you may not want the kids to see any porn spam that slips through.

get a program called mail-washer you can do the above and more even before it lands in your in-box, it's also great for deterring spam

Assuming that you are using OE6. go to View, Layout, then untick the Preview box at the bottom of the menu page. That will stop the emails opening unless you click on them . That is putting control back into your hands.

Also: Tools/Options/Read and untick the box that says: Automatically download messages when viewing in the preview pane.

To do what you ask - Right Click on the header, and choose Delete from the context menu that appears. If don't even want them to go to the Deleted folder, hold down the shift key when you click on Delete.

If you do away with the Preview pane, as suggested above, you will be able to click on the emails once without opening them. This will enable you to select any number of them at one time and using DieSse's Shift key approach, delete them permanently all at once.

Have to agree with xtreme_computing. Have always been a bit of a sceptic as regards download managers, cheap utilities etc, but Mailwasher Pro is superb at dealing with unwanted emails, is extremely easy to setup and operate and very reasonably priced...and no...I don't work for them.

For security reasons, Preview Pane should not be enabled (in Outlook Express) as merely clicking on a suspect e-mail can start a virus on its way.

After disabling Preview Pane, you will then only have a list of e-mails received.

To view one safely, highlight the line with one click and select Properties.

In the Details tab you can read the Header. Select the Message Source button to read the message. If you don't like what you see click Cancel and retrace your steps to the original highlighted line.

Then Delete it using the Delete button at the top of the page.

Thanks very much to one and all for the advice. I have now shut down the preview pane which is what I must have done previously. Old age and a 'senior moment' have done the damage.
Thanks again!!
