how long can defragmenting take mine has been going for 36 hours and still says 1%!!!.

doesnt seem right what o/s there is a problem with defrag in me.try downloading diskeeper lite its free and is a lot the forum for diskeeper lite and there is a link posted by powerless.darren

Do it in Safe Mode. To do this reboot and keep tapping the F8 key just before the Windows screen appears. Select Safe Mode from the menu that should appear.

This stops "unnecessary" processes running that interfere with defrag.

I found that screen saver interferes with defrag especially in ME

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, get Norton Utilities. It has a program called "Speeddisk" works every time and even stops task scheduler automatically for you which may be causing your problem now.

And is much cheaper than Norton sys works.

You should have no problems in safe mode.

If you run defrag in normal mode some background processes inturupt it and it will keep restarting and that is why it takes so long.

It will still take some time though. An hour or so should do it (depending on your set up and drive size and speed.
