Dear friends email virus

  catho 10:42 26 Jan 2010

Yesterday an email entitled 'Dear Friends' was sent to what looks like all contact addresses on my hotmail account. Not picked up by a McAfee scan.
Please will you suggest the best way to eliminate from my PC.

Thank you

Download and update malwarebytes free version and then run it and remove anything that it finds.

May not have come from your PC. Instead someone may have hacked your hotmail account. This is what happened to my son's hotmail account. Change password asap.

My son's Hotmail account was also hacked in this way.

BTW this is one reason why I personally don't use hotmail. Google mail seems to be much better.

I had a dig around and found that my Yahoo mail must have been hacked as the "Dear Friend" message was part of an "On Holiday" auto reply message which I did not create. Much deleting of messges and even more changing of passwords later I hope I have killed this off.
