Dealing with Self-installing Pains

Just now I started my browser to find my home page set to lop.com and two new toolbars installed from lop.com. It's extremely annoying when it narrows down your browsing screen and I couldn't find the option to uninstall it anywhere.

So what I had to do was use System Restore to return to yesterday's Restore Point. Luckily the restore was a success..

What can and should be done to prevent these self-installing plug-ins and links and programs from running? Any good, efficient software or manual precautions that might work?

Download update and run Spywareblaster, that'll keep it from coming back, KrySTaL-KoDE.click here

I use it, it'll check quickly at startup to see if your startpage has been changed and then exit. If you've been hi-jacked it'll restore the homepage to one of your choice.
