is it power supply or motherboad how to test 16:43 09 Jul 2003

Here are some things to look for if your PC won't power on:
Check the power cord and outlet.
Check the power supply's connector to the motherboard. Disconnect and reconnect to be sure its firmly connected.

Check the power supply. If you can test it in another PC, try it.
Check the power switch on the PC's case and make sure it's properly connected to the motherboard. Try shorting the jumper pins that the switch uses to power on the PC. If that works, the switch is bad.

Not exactly overwhelmed with detail!

As a start - How dead is it? No noise, no clunks no lights or sound of fans?.........PSU

Simplest check of power supply, try a kettle lead which should plug in. .....If it now works, then put your own lead back with a new 5amp fuse in the plug.

Depending on your daring you may feel able to use a meter to check that the main switch on the computer is functioning, but if there is really no sign of life then think about a new PSU.

Others can take the story on from here.

Check the PSU by unplugging from the wall & removing the plug from the Mobo. Then put a bent paperclip into the Mobo plug with the green wire and loop it so the other end goes in to the Mobo plug with a black wire (Best to use a plastic covered paperclip with the ends stripped) Then plug in the wall. If the fans start then the PSU should be ok. If not then its probably dead.

Oh but as soon as you know things are running or not - switch the wall plug off.
