DDR ram memory advice please

  Dalglish2 19:59 18 Apr 2010

I am running xp home on my desktop with 2x256mb of ram on board and not surprisingly, the performance is pants.
I am looking to upgrade and have 3 ram slots in total.
What combination of ram memory to fill these slots would give the optimum performance?
I would prefer not to spend more than approx £50.

Assuming you have a branded PC, just use Crucial's website to look up your PC make and model and it will tell everything you need to know.

Here it is: click here

FOr XP not worth going above 3.5G therefore 1G stick in each slot is your best bet

For £50 you'll get two 1G sticks at current prices.

XP should fly with 2G

You have 3 ram slots but you need to know what maximum ram your PC can use. Run the Crucial "scan" as suggested. Once you have that information you can look at different sites for the best price.

You may well be able to use 400Mhz PC3200, but check with Crucial's scanner first. If you're dumping all the existing ram, go for PC3200 instead of PC2700. The odd thing about Crucial's recommendations is that they do not show a preference if you can use both. Adding one 1Gb stick will make a significant difference if you want to keep cost down.
