Just clearing out cookies and history and noticed a dat file, when i tried to open the file spysubtract came up with a warning with options to allow or block.
From what i gather these dat files created by microsft contain histories of sites visited etc.
Would like to know your veiws on dat files
1 do they pose a security risk
2 is it possible to remove the dat files without any ill effects.
3.is it possible to delete info inside these files since they must grow in size

thanks for your response VOG, not sure this would clean dat files as i think some of these so called dat files are hidden and difficult to find, how will i know if the contents of the dat files have been removed?

If you run it, CleanUp! will delete a lot of temporary files then ask if you want to remove others on a reboot - these include the index.dat files.

Internet Explorer will recreate them though - there's nothing you can do about that.

thanks VoG i'll give it a go i assume cleanup will remove the contents of the index dat file on reboot ;but will accumulate again.
If i set history to 0days would that stop the build up of history?

Yes, setting history days to 0 will empty your history files once a day.
