C:\Windows\_Defau~1.PIF Invalid Program File Name

  lecram 16:29 21 Jun 2007

I am still getting this message at each startup. I have recently purchased a legit copy of Regcure along with Xoft Anti-spyware. When I run a scan of the registry and for anti-spyware, I still get the error message "C;\Windows\_DEFAU~1.PIF Invalid program file name, please check your PIF file. Choose close to terminate the application."at each startup. Even after running an AVG scan no threats are found on my computer.

My computer knowledge is still in the beginning phase. I want to start using my laptop for internet purposes but am worried if I need to go to any secure sites that I wont be secure because I am not sure if this is some type of undetectable spyware.

Is it possible to reload my entire operating system and eradicate this problem. Should I take my computer to a specialist?? Not sure how to rid my computer of this startup error. I have tried a number of suggestions already.

Any futher suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's just a filename with an incorrect path.
Start menu/Run, type regedit

do a search for the text you see in the error message

or just

when you find it, export the key for safety's sake
then delete the incorrect data.

What Fruit Bat /\0/\ suggested is safer, try that first

I tried both your ideas brundle and Fruit Bat /\0/\ but I could not find this file. I then went into C:\Windows and located a file called default. I cut this file, placed it on my memory stick and rebooted ny PC. My pc came up with a diffent error called:
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction . CS:06e2 IP:e7e7 OP:63b7 14 00 00 Choose close to terminate the application."
The same PIF error was still there though but behind this error. I placed the default file back into the windows directory but this error is still coming up. The C:/WINDOWS/j6226922.exe was always in the background when my original PIF files error came up. I just could never access it. By cutting and pasting as I did its alsmost as if I brought this error message to the front.

Any suggestions?

Something unwanted has been active on your PC - randomly named files in the Windows folder are a giveaway.

Complete scans with AVG Antispyware & Spybot S&D would be a good measure.

looks like trouble.

Run a full anti virus scan, and as brundle suggests run some antispyware software.
