Cursor problem

I'm not sure if this is a genuine problem, perhaps one of you helpful people could tell me. My mouse cursor is an arrow head and, probably like everyone else, when something is loading it changes to a sort of egg-timer which stops when download is complete. Today I've noticed that every few seconds the egg timer flicks on next to the arrow for a split second and then vanishes, only to reappear a few seconds later for another split second. This is happening in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer and, so far nothing seems amiss. Can anyone help?
