cursor has a mind of it's own

Just lately my cursor seems to have developed a mind of it's own. Without any help from me, it slowly moves around the screen, usually downwards but will sometimes go upwards. Very frustrating, as I can be hovering it over something, and by the time I click the mouse, the cursor has moved away from the link. Can anyone advise a cure for this? System is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Thanks.

what sort of mouse are you using?

Reflective surfaces can cause that problem so try using the mouse on a matte surface instead.

If it's a wireless mouse then try moving the little USB transceiver into a different port so it's closer to the mouse.

I normally use a Kensington Expert Mouse. I disconnected it, and tried a standard mouse, and the problem immediately went away. So I took the Kensington apart, cleaned up the lens and the switches, and put it back together. Problem solved. Thanks for your help.
