Please help. My daughter's laptop is plagued by crypted.gen. Every time she opens Chrome she gets a popup from Avira about Crypted.gen. It usually says Access is denied and lets me send it to quarintine but it's very very annoying. I;ve tried all the usual - malawarebytes, spybot etc but nothing is getting rid of it and a search on google hasn't really helped either.

Thanks Jock - sorry for delay in replying - I had a few laptops to fix so got waylaid.

Anyhow - I tried some of the things that link referenced to - it didn't specify Crypted.gen - Perhaps Crypt.XPACK.Gen is related?

In any case nothing worked.

How hard/safe would it be to reset laptop. Or that too extreme? My daughter only has some word docs and bookmarks that are easily copied.

It's prob in a webpage in the Temporary Internet Files folder/ Chrome History

Try clearing History and all temp internet files.
