Only way to be sure is buy a cable tester or try another cable

If it works. When you plug it into both computers the computers should see it

How do I know if the Computer sees it?

Do Maplins have a cable tester? If I take it back can they check it do you think?

you do not give us a clue as to what you are actually doing. With the xover cable fitted and both pcs on right click on network places - properties and right click on tcpip and properties. Now click in both left hand boxes show when connected and show if poor connectivity etc. If you have zone alarm or similar firewall you will need to set the ip address and get it trusted. Having done this you should be able to double click on network places - entire network - ms network - mshome or whatever you have called your network. You have set both of them up on the same network havent you?
