my main 40gig "C" drive is 75% full, & crashed while on defrag operation with the following message 0x0000007E(0xC0000005, 0xf84AC38E, 0xf8985C84, 0xF8985980)
atapi.sys.address F84AC38Ebase at F849F000,data stop 4110764d

This might as well be chinese to me...anyone know what it means please. My second drive is 120gig with enough space for anyrhing

Will the computer boot normally now, or will it boot at all?........ Op system is XP?

Sometimes defrag has to be preceded by scandisk and it is always wise to delete all accessable rubbish and turn off all background programs first, to make things easier for defrag.

Can you fill in a few details of what happened and what the state is now?

Try starting in SAFE MODE in XP (F8) on boot up, or for Win ME and Win98, start from the boot disk and run defrag

If you have a bootable install cd for XP run chkdsk from the recovery console:

Set your PC BIOS to boot from CDROM, Boot from the CD
Select the first option R Repair/Recovery Console
Select your Windows partition by number (usually 1)
Login to XP with administrator password
Run CHKDSK /P from the command line

System is WXPs2. System seems to be going again, but was crashing similarly last week & I'm alarmed I'm going to loose something if not careful. (Backed up "my docs). Do not understand about BIOS. Also how do I check for or see what it looks like or see if there's an update...and what does the fault message mean...
(The tips on speeding up the PC in the last issue- I've got all this & not even got quarter of the way down the list!)

This may be overheating as the CPU is doing more work when it is defraging the Drive try doing it with side of computer case
