CPU speeds

I want to build a new PC and I've a little question about processor speeds I hope someone can enlighten me on.
I'm thinking of buying an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ running at 2.2 GHz to go on an MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard (or should I go for an Asus K8V Deluxe maybe?). How does the chip stack up against the similarly-priced 3.2GHz Pentium 4? Is the Pentium literally faster by 1 GHz? Is this not a fair comparision? Should I be looking at other things too? Most of my stuff will be web browsing with a bit of movie watching and video editing and perhaps the odd game such as Call of Duty.

By buying it you are putting your money in the best and Latest CPU development, not past technology P4 is at the End of it's life

Thanks for that info - sounds like I'm going for decent stuff.

What about the motherboard choice?
