Have just bought a Shuttle SN85G4 -v3 -AMD
I am now ready to purchase a cpu.
I only want to spend about £140-150.
I get confused with terms like 'Newcastle' etc.in the description of the AMD cpu's
Also the end of some product codes seem to differ for the same cpu ie 'AEP 4AX' and 'box'
I am a bit of a novice.

take a look at click here and look for reviews it helps explain the difference between the winchester and newcastle cores. they are built slightly differently and one runs cooler than the other. off the top of my head i think it is the newcastle but check it out.

Your motherboard will take the 754 pin CPU.

This limits you to either the Newcastle or Clawhammer processors. The Newcastle has 512MB of L2 cache and the Clawhammer 1MB. (I think the Winchester core is only available as a 939 pin CPU. Although I stand to be corrected)

From your point of view it is cost that matters. The Clawhammer is a £200+ processor.

At your stated budget the 3400+ seem to be the obvious choice.click here
