Copying dvd to avi

Hi. I wondered if anyone knew any free software that will copy a home dvd to my hard drive in a format that I can play through Picasa. The rest of the videos I have on Picasa, taken with my digital camera, are in AVI and MPG format so I presume the DVD would need to be converted to either of these formats too.
I have tried DVD Shrink but that doesnt seem to do it. Thanks for any responses

Ellion. Hi thanks for that. I have looked at several paid for progs but I only want to use it once to put one home movie dvd onto the hard drive so dont really want to pay for it(hope I dont sound mean)

Eedcam. I actually already have VLC. This doesnt do what I need, it plays but doesnt convert

Hi Woodchip. Unfortunately that prog has a watermark in the middle of the screen until you pay $29.
