converting images decently

To have pictures that load in decent time on the internet you need jpgs and gifs however I mainly use bmps.
My question is what is the best way to convert the images? Just going onto paint and save as and changing the type leaves gifs covered in spots and jpgs all merged in together.

Probably the best way is to use Paint Shop Pro, but most of the PC mags have an image prog of some sort on the cover cd every couple of months that would do the job a lot cheaper than shelling out £80 or so. There are also a number of shareware progs about that you can download to do it.

Irfanview (free) from click here will convert most pictures to any format you like.
