Converting FAT32 to NTFS WINXP

  Shellshock66 15:45 29 Sep 2005

I have the following system
AMD Sempron 2600 CPU
ASUS K8S-MX motherboard
512 RAM
WD SATA 160GB Hard Drive
Aopen Combo drive
History set 1st used with Win 98 HD formatted by Western Digital utilities
As 137GB as win 98 does not recognize drives larger than this

I have now successfully installed Windows XP Home on my system.
On going in to Computer Management – Storage –Disk management
I get the following information
Disc 0 Basic 149.05 GB

128.00 GB FAT32
Healthy System

21.05 GB Unallocated

I wish to do two things if possible with out having to reinstall WIN XP and all the other software I now have on my system
1 Upgrade the file system from FAT32 to NTFS
2 Change drive C size from 128.00GB to 149.05 GB by allocating the 28.5 GB unallocated into drive C:

Click on start, tun and type: cmd and then hit ok.

At the Command Prompt execute the command:

C:\> CONVERT C: /fs:ntfs

Where C: is a name of the drive you want to convert.

After machine re-boot conversion process will start and you'll have your FAT32 converted to NTFS without of data loss.

As for the unallocated space upgrade your xp installation with sp2, from windows update or cd.

Thanks for that I have sucessfully converted the files on C Drive to NTFS.
As for the unallocated space as far as I know I have WIN XP with SP2 and all the upgrades form the MS site so how would I allocate the 21.05GB in to Drive C

I think it can be done from Computer Managemnt console (other wise its using a program like partition Magic or the DOS based FDSIK).

try copying this into Start -> Run:
"compmgmt.msc /s"

You can not do so in XP.

You could partition the 21GB as an additional drive but you can not integrate it into the existing C partition unless you use Partition magic or similar.

Would Nortons Partinion Magic software do the job?
