Conversion of MOV format to MPG or AVI

My camera will shoot short videos. These might need to be edited. They are shot and downloaded in MOV format. I can view them but my video editing programme, ie Roxio Easy CD and DVD creator v6, does not recognise this format.

I am using XP

Please can anyone advise me on a programme which will convert MOV format to say MPG or AVI such that I can edit on the few occasions I might need. I stress this latter and would prefer a freebie if poss since being retired money is frequently at a premium.

Many thanks for any help offered

Please reply here, not via email. That will enable others to offer advice and it will likely get you a reply faster: I don't often check this particular a/c.
