continuous freezing on XP

  eysha 14:39 16 Jan 2010

I am writing on behalf of my daughter who has a Toshiba laptop running XP. It is freezing up in minutes but we don't know why so any suggestions would be great as we don't want to flatten the whole thing.
No new programmes have been put on but she cannot do anything with it now. she has tried to run spywear terminator but it freezes part way through, same with anything else she tries to do.
Is there a solution or does it have to be flattened and everything reinstalled again?

If this problem has begun fairly recently, try doing a System Restore to a day/point before the problem. As it won't load properly, use the 'Safe Mode with a Command Prompt' option - see click here for instructions.

If the above doesn't work, it could be hardware related & we'll have to try something else. Is the laptop under warranty?

Btw, what do you mean by 'flatten'? Does it involve some kind of road roller? G

could it be an overheat problem? make sure all air inlets are clear of fluff etc and perhaps see if you can vacuum any muck from the various grills.

Will try all suggestions - thanks.
Flatten = format the hard drive, lol.

FReeezing PC

1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

2. PSU voltages

3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

4. faulty memory stick try memtest click here

5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment
