I am gctting messages about compacting files to save disk space on my desktop and laptops. I have no wish to do this as the saving is minimal but I cannot seem to get rid of the message everytime I log on.

Which program is wanting to compact files?

If it is your email program then that is quite normal for it to Compact (tidy up) email files every so often.

Check first how much emails you do not need to save. Some might go back 10 years or so and the receipts might no longer be necessary. I usually delete or send to bin those not important . Usually the bin or deleted mail folder will remove all after 30 days anyway but I like to be sure. Check your email supplier's program first as to how limited saved email are before you'compact'. I've never come across this issue simply by good housekeeping and noting how much GB/MB's I have left.

Thanks to all, I have deleted masses of accumulated old stuff and junk which seems to have got rid of the message.
