Connecting 2 PCs

I am trying to connect my laptop and PC so that I can transfer files more easily. Both have installed network cards and I have the RJ-45 cable, but I cant get it to work.

I tried my laptop with a friends and it worked, just having to change the workgroups to match. So i know the laptop is ready to go, what shoudl I do to my PC??

Laptop - 1.46 AMD Athlon XP, 368mb, 20gb, XP Home
PC - 900mhz AMD Athlon, 512mb, 20gb, 98SE

The problem is possibly the cable. You must have a crossover cable and you may be using a patch cable. (RJ45 is the connector on the end)

I tried the cable that came with the laptop. How do I create the connection?

Laptop to PC?
Pc to Laptop?

It does not matter which way round you connect the crossover cable.
