Connect laptop to cable modem

My Granddaughter has bought a laptop and wants to use it wirelessly. The broadband is supplied by NTL to a desktop computer through a cable modem. To enable her to use the laptop wirelessly I think all she needs is a router connected between the cable modem and the desktop, she can then set up the laptop to connect to the router using the laptop onboard wireless facility. Is this correct?

Can you advise if the modem has to be of a special type to use cable broadband. Any recommendations, as to the router, would be helpful. Thank you in advance for any advice.
