Computer Shutdown

For some unknown reason my computer shuts down of its own accord after be switched on for an hour or so.

The computer freeze's and virtually straight after it closes down, once computer has shut down we are able to restart it straight away,

It do not matter what program you are using it still does the same

...is there an error message / blue screen ?

If you are running XP, check the Event log in Start, Control Panel, Administrative tools, Event Viewer. The 'System' log is probably your best bet. Look around the time of the shutdown - there may be some error in there.

Also, if you leave it on for an hour and don't use ANY program does it shutdown?

That would be a good check to do as then at least we know it is based on your activity somehow.

graham12,

Can you go to control panel-power options and tell us what the settings are.

  pauldonovan 12:11 06 May 2005

What is the text behind those event logs? If you double click on them in the event viewer you should see a description which will be key - it should tell you which app.

Also as per above question, can you confirm if you leave it running with no application usage does it still shutdown after hour or so?

Regards,

Paul

Power options are set at never

yes if you leave the computer without doing anything then it will shutdown after about an hour but sometimes less.

The log reads as follows

Application Hang

Hanging application iexplore.exe version 6.0.2900.2180. hang module hungapp version 0.0.0.0 hang.address 0x00000000

Application Error

faulting application drwtsn 32exe version 5.1.2600.0 faulting module dbghelp.dll version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0001295d

hope this helps

graham12,

this is a response to the same problem you are having, and from what I have seen in other forums, it looks like you may have a bug/trojan/spyware/malware.

I would suggest following the instructions in this posting. click here

Rotha..you should set up a separate discussion from the main help page, we can't easily deal with two separate issues here.

This thread is now locked and can not be replied to.
