Computer not displaying

The problem that I have had now seems to be resolved but id like to know what it was so that I can sort it out if it happens again. What was happening was that id turn on my computer and then the hdd light would start flashing as normal but when Id turn on the monitor nothing would come on the screen and the monitor would just go straight onto standby, then a one long beep every 8 seconds or so would come from the motherboard. Eventually it work one time. I just kept turning the computer off manually and then turining it on again and eventually it worked. So far it hasn't done it again.

Does anyone know why this happened and how to fix it if it happens again????

You should turn on your monitor before booting up your pc.
