my desktop has recently started to freeze or just reset when it feels like it.

it's about three years old now, running xp. i havn't installed anything new that i know of, and it doesn't have any particular programme it does it on. it just does it.

anyone know what i should be looking for as far as casues go before i have to get an IT man in or (god forbid) a new computer.

Make sure the air vents are clear of dust and fluff. If so inside will probably need cleaning as well.Or maybe a system restore to a date before you had the problems. Not the Zone Alarm problem that is going about is it.It might be the PSU on its way out.

Is your harddrive reaching capacity?
If so, delete what you can.

FReeezing PC

1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

2. PSU voltages

3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

4. faulty memory stick try memtest click here

5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

As above it may need a good clean inside it

I've found that some toolbars can cause this prob and some of them seem to get dowloaded with Third Party software updates such as your ISP, Readers and Media Players without the operator being fully aware.

Check your browser for any sneak toolbars.

IE is known to be a problematic browser and I find it is particularly prone to freeze-ups and hangings whereas Firefox and Opera don't to anything like to the same degree.
